Saturday Becomes Sunday

Well I was bad on Saturday and didn't do my run! I went to my girlfriend's brother's place to help him frame out his basement and just didn't get to my run. Now this is a habit that has to stop. If I am suppose to train on a certain day I have to do it no matter what I am doing that day. It is too easy to say "oh I'll do it tomorrow" and then when tomorrow comes not do it. So far if I have missed a day I have made up for it the next day but I am sure that that trend won't continue. So there is an easy way to fix that and that is to NOT SKIP ANY TRAINING DAYS!

Now on to what I did accomplish today. I went to Millennium Place today and ran on a treadmill for 24 minutes. I haven't ran on a nice treadmill like that for a long time and it was kind of nice. I know that I can't do that all the time because running on a treadmill is not the same as running on the ground but it was nice to switch it up a bit, plus it gives me a little bit of an idea of how I am actually doing. Speaking of which I did 3.2 KM in 24 minutes. That is 15 minutes at 5MPH and 5 minutes and 7 MPH and then a really good 4 minute cool down. So all in all it was a really great run.

I also did my ride for today. I moved my bike computer so that it actually reads my speed sensor on my rear wheel so for the first time I have an idea as to how far I would be going outside. My program called for 13 KM and I had been riding for 30 minutes so I figured that those numbers would be close to each other. Guess they are not that close. I rode for 3o minutes at an average speed of 33.4 KM/h and a total distance of 17 KM. So I won't be dropping my time any but I'll try to let my distance catch up to my time!

I must admit it was a really good day training today and hope that my next week goes even better. I'll be posting all my weekly numbers tomorrow night after work.

Take care and have a great week!

Rest Day

Ahh good ole Friday's, rest day! Never thought that rest days would be such a big deal but they are. It's the only night I can come home and not have to think about what I have to do and how little time I have to actually do it. Unfortunately I totally made up for my lack of training with a hellishly difficult day at work! So it really is a good thing that I rest tonight!

Now the main reason I am making a post. I forgot to post my weight, resting heat rate and body fat for the last two weeks. I will post this every week at the begining of the week to help track my progress. So here we go.

Week 1: Resting Heart Rate: 60BPM
Weight: 255 lbs
BF: 29.1%

Week 2: Resting Heart Rate: 60BPM
Weight 250 lbs
BF: 28.7%

So after one week I am done 5 pounds and my BF is down .4%. Not too bad if I say so myself. Hopefully this trend continues.

Also going to add some pictures in here to track my progress that way. So yes you are going to get to see my pasty white body mostly naked. Yes you may shudder now!

Details

Alright now that you have heard the story of me I should catch you all up on my training (funny how I write as if someone is reading this!).

So I am currently in my second week of an 11 week sprint triathlon training program. My first week was pretty good and pretty uneventful. I managed 500M in swimming 3KM in running and 1:05 on the bike (riding inside on rollers for the moment waiting for winter to end). This is a beginners program and is designed to take you from couch to sprint so it starts off pretty slow. I am cool with that because I am also a carpenter and spend all my day outside working so the slow build up is nice.

Things that I learned in my first week. I can't run on the treadmill at home, I just about killed myself on it. Not really designed for my size. My swimming is surprisingly pretty strong but I really need to figure out how to kick for my freestyle or I'll die in the longer swims. My ridding is most definitively my strongest discipline. I can't wait to get my distances up to justify a nice Tri bike!

Week two got off to a great start with a quick 250M swim followed by a fantastic run on Tuesday. The swim went really well and I felt really strong in the pool. I was even more excited about finally doing flip turns! I know I shouldn't be so excited about something so simple but I was pretty pumped! As for the run I have gotten new shoes and they are amazing. I went somewhere new to get my feet checked out and it turns out I have been wearing the wrong type of shoe since I started running over 2 years ago! These new shoes are awesome. They are New Balance 800's and are a totally neutral shoe and I love them! My run was 2.75Km in 0:15 so I think the shoes helped. I like to swim then run right after. My lungs are already working so my breathing is easier while running.

Wednesday was a great ride with an amazingly strong 1 minute sprint at the end. I can't wait for winter to finally end so I can get out on the road. Ridding on my rollers in front of the big screen isn't really cutting it anymore. Did 30 minutes and felt good.

Thursday (tonight) I did another 250M swim. It went pretty good. Really tired from work this week and I felt it in the pool. Tried to work on my kicking but it just doesn't work and I can't figure out why. Going to have to look into a coach in a month or so I think just to get that figured out because I know I can get up to 1Km swims with just my arms but after that I'll get killed in the swim.

So that brings you all up to date. Tomorrow is an off day so probably nothing new untill Saturday.

1st Post, Week 2

Welcome to Big Man Tri!

My name is Jack and I have decided to try to enter the wonderful world of triathlon!

So I have decided to keep this blog to share with anyone that wants to follow me. I figure this is a great way to keep myself motivated and a fun way to keep a training log. I also keep a written training log that I will share excerpts from now and again.

You might be asking yourself why "Big Man Tri"? Well that might have something to do with the fact that I am 31 years old, 5'10" and currently 255 lbs with a BFI of 28.5%! So I am a bigger guy especially for my height. But that doesn't mean that I'm not active and that I haven't accomplished a thing or two in my day.

Two years ago I ran a half marathon in Vancouver, I have also done 6 MS150 bike tours. I was also at one time a competitive swimmer. That was of course way back in high school so that doesn't really count anymore but at that time I was also 202 lbs and built pretty damn well. But as you can see I decided for some reason to let myself go completely.

Now in the last couple of years in my weight and strength has gotten much much better. Thanks mostly in part to the constant coaching and encouragement of my girlfriend. So now it is time to show her what my worth is. Now I am going to try and do something that I have talked about for awhile and I figure it is now or never.

I am being totally realistic about this and am not planning on doing the IRONMAN this summer but I thought I would start with a Tri-a-Tri followed by a couple of Sprints for this season and then into ITU distance next year and then maybe if all goes well IRONMAN in Penticton in the summer of 2011.

Seems pretty realistic to me and hopefully I can keep on pace and pull this all off. I will be updating this blog on hopefully a daily basis. I invite you to follow my trainwreck and see where it takes me and maybe in the summer of 2011 I`ll be posting a picture of me crossing the line in Penticton!
